What is a search engine?

 Search Engine

A search engine is a web-based tool that enables users to locate information on the World Wide Web. Popular examples of search engines are Google, Yahoo!, and MSN Search.
Search engines utilize automated software applications (referred to as robots, bots, or spiders) that travel along with the Web, following links from page to page, site to site.
The information gathered by the spiders is used to create a searchable index of the Web.
Search Engine refers to a huge database of internet resources such as web pages, newsgroups, programs, images, etc. It helps to locate information on the World Wide Web.

Users can search for any information by passing queries in form of keywords or phrases. It then searches for relevant information in its database and returns to the user.

How do search engines work?

Every search engine uses different complex mathematical formulas to generate search results. The results for a specific query are then displayed on the SERP.
Search engine algorithms take the key elements of a web page, including the page title, content, and keyword density, and come up with a ranking for where to place the results on the pages
. Each search engine’s algorithm is unique, so a top ranking on Yahoo! does not guarantee a prominent ranking on Google, and vice versa. To make things more complicated, the algorithms used by search engines are not only closely guarded secrets, they are also constantly undergoing modification and revision.
This means that the criteria to best optimize a site must be surmised through observation, as well as trial and error — and not just once, but continuously.

Search Engine Components

Generally, there are three basic components of a search engine as listed below:

Web crawler
It is also known as spiders or bots. It is a software component that traverses the web to gather information.

Database
All the information on the web is stored in the database. It consists of huge web resources.

Search Interfaces
This component is an interface between the user and the database. It helps the user to search through the database.

Search Engine Working

A web crawler, database, and the search interface are the major components of a search engine that actually makes search engine to work. Search engines make use of Boolean expression AND, OR, NOT to restrict and widen the results of a search. Following are the steps that are performed by the search engine:
The search engine looks for the keyword in the index for a predefined database instead of going directly to the web to search for the keyword.
It then uses software to search for the information in the database. This software component is known as a web crawler.

Google

Google Search Engine is the best search engine in the world and it is also one of the most popular products from Google.
Almost 70 percent of the Search Engine market has been acquired by Google. The tech giant is always evolving and looking to improve the search engine algorithm to provide the best results to the end-user.
Although Google appears to be the biggest search engine, as of 2015 YouTube is now more popular than Google (on desktop computers).

Update: Bing was renamed to Microsoft Bing in October 2020.
The best alternative search engine to Google is Microsoft Bing. Bing’s search engine share is between 2.83% and 12.31%.
Bing is Microsoft’s attempt to challenge Google in search, but despite their efforts, they still did not manage to convince users that their search engine can be as reliable as Google.
Their search engine market share is constantly low even though Bing is the default search engine on Windows PCs.

Yahoo

Yahoo & Bing compete more with each other than with Google.
A recent report on netmarketshare.com tells us that Yahoo has a market share of 7.68 percent. Although a leader as a free email provider, this is declining significantly though with their recent acknowledgment that User Details & Passwords were hacked last year.

Baidu has a global market share between 0.68% and 11.26%.
Baidu was founded in 2000 and it is the most popular search engine in China. Its market share is increasing steadily and according to Wikipedia, Baidu is serving billions of search queries per month.
It is currently ranked at position 4, in the Alexa Rankings.

Yandex

Launched in 1997, Yandex is the most used search engine in Russia.
Yandex also has a great presence in Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Belarus, and Turkey.
It provides services like Yandex Maps, Yandex Music, online translator, Yandex Money, and many other services.

DuckDuckGo

DuckDuckGo is an internet search engine that was launched in 2008 by Gabriel Weinberg.  What sets it apart from Google and Bing is the fact that DuckDuckGo doesn’t track user searches or keep a record of them. Similarly, it doesn’t collect or share your personal info.
The company clearly mentions in their privacy policy that they think it’s kind of terrifying that people at search engines can view all user info. However, they are mainly concerned when these people either release user info to the general public or provide it to law enforcement. That’s why they came up with the idea of developing DuckDuckGo that promises complete anonymity and privacy.

Ask.com

Founded in 1995, Ask.com, previously known as Ask Jeeves. Their key concept was to have search results based on a simple question + answer web format.
It is a question & answer community where you can get the answers for your question and it integrates a large amount of archive data to answer your question.
Because of this dependency on archived and active user contributions, the results will not be as current as those you get in Google, Bing, and Yahoo. They’ve tried to counter where their resources don’t have the answer they take help from a third-party search engine. Interestingly they don’t name who this is.

Lycos

Lycos has a good reputation in the search engine industry. Its key areas served are email, web hosting, social networking, and entertainment websites.

AOL

Aol.com is also among the top search engines. These are the guys that used to send out CD’s which you’d load onto your PC to install their browser and modem software.
Once the pre-eminent player they now have a market share of 0.59 percent. Verizon Communication bought AOL for $4.4 billion. It was started back in 1983 as Control Video Corporation.
It was named America Online in 1991 and in 2009 as AOL Inc. AOL is a global mass media company which is based in New York.
The company also provides advertising services as AOL Advertising, AOL mail, and AOL Platform.

Internet Archive

archive.org is the internet archive search engine. You can use it to find out how a web site looked since 1996. It is a very useful tool if you want to trace the history of a domain and examine how it has changed over the years.
